However, Chatty Cathy was another doll that faced discontinuation due to changing consumer tastes and the emergence of new toy trends in the 1960s and 1970s. For one thing, the doll's string-pull mechanism became outdated compared to the electronic and interactive features of newer dolls.

When it arrived on the market in 1960, the doll played eleven phrases, including "I love you", "I hurt myself!" and "Please take me with you". In 1963, seven more were added to the doll's repertoire, including "Let's play school" and "May I have a cookie?", for a total of 18 phrases.

Chatty Cathy, with its pull string mechanism connected to a simple photograph record inside the doll, was the first successful talking doll. Introduced in 1960, the doll "spoke" eleven phrases. By 1963, eighteen phrases.
